ALCO RT20 TANGENTIAL HEAD
ALCO RT Tangential Thread Rolling Attachments are for use on the cross slide of machines where the work piece rotates and the cross slide feed can be controlled. These include turret lathes, single and multi spindle autos, copy lathes and CNC lathes.
Very short threads, tapered threads and threads behind a shoulder can be produced, and even threads both sides of a shoulder as long as they are identical.
The attachment consists of two assemblies, the head itself and the holder, or housing, which is designed to adapt the head to the machine being used. The rolls are a pair and are only for one thread size. They are carried calliper-wise in the head, one above and one below the work piece, and are synchronised by a gear train in the head.
Thread rolling speeds are 20 – 100 metres/minute. Typical rolling times are:- 1/2" UNC, 0.92 seconds, 1” BSF, 2 seconds 1/4 BSP, 0.95 seconds.
The work piece should be turned to approximately the thread pitch diameter before rolling. This varies according to the material and should be verified by trial runs. The blank should be chamfered at around 10 – 30 degrees to the axis.
The head is fed in on the cross slide until it contacts the work piece. Within 15 – 20 revolutions the head centres itself on the work piece, and after a dwell of a few revolutions more, it can be quickly withdrawn to its start position. The head does not move axially, so that the maximum thread length depends on the width of the rolls.
A setting piece is required to adjust the head to the thread diameter and locate the holder to its forward position limit.
